Not bad, but didn't hook me personally and I've got too many other things to read. Gotta prioritize unfortunately!

I'm struggling to review this book because it left me wanting more. More thematic parallels between the two timelines and characters, more development and depth to the characters and the plot, more exploration of the cultural division, xenophobia, racism and class structures that defined each era. SMG covered a lot of ground with these topics, but I fear she was limited in the depth of exploration in 311 pages.
One central theme of the book is about women finding and exerting their power under the strict limitations of men and patriarchal structures, and the mirror of minoritized people navigating structures of racism and white supremacy and empire. There is so much to say with Salome here, but the rapid climax of plot felt too quick to fully explore.

Gustave Moreau drew a hundred sketches of Salome. Her passion haunted him. Thats what it is,' [Vera] said, carefully picking her words. ... 'It's passion. It's madness on stage. The intensity of feeling that gets under your skin. It's chasing a moment you'll never regain. It's loving, for the first time. When you love like that, I think, you'd like to tear your heart out. Salome cuts off John the Baptist's head, but he already ruined her. He stabbed her heart."

a documentary style, historical fiction book set in Hollywood in the 1950’s sounds like my perfect book. really wanted it to hit much harder then it did.

I don't know what to rate this. I didn't vibe with the Salome parts. I loved the old Hollywood timeline. The plot was just a bit too tragic? I don't know. I love SMG. I love how many genres she can write. This probably just wasn't for me. Not rating.
