While the backdrop to this story was gorgeous, I found all of the characters to be really flat and one dimensional. The pacing was a little slow for me as well.

SMG is one of my favorite contemporary authors. I love her work and her range is extraordinary. But this one was not one of my favorites. It was good—very good—but SMG has set the bar so incredibly high with her other work that it didn’t quite meet my expectations. Maybe it deserves a re-read and I will feel differently in time. I’d love to do an SMG retrospective one day and read every one of her books in one sitting…. Probably won’t get to do that for a long time given how remarkably prolific she is, and I hope she just keeps on going for many more years to come! Despite this book not being a favorite, SMG is still one of my favorites and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.
