I thoroughly enjoyed this story! The character growth is *chef’s kiss* and I want to join them in saving this world! Ahhh can’t wait to see what happens next!

It started out a little slow and I got lost with the descriptions of the bridge and the lay out in the beginning.

But towards the middle it really pulled through and the pace picked up. A very creative/original idea that was executed well. I want to read more from this writer now!

Loved Aren and Lara as characters, especially Aren. It seems incredibly difficult in the fantasy genre to write a self-assured confident man that is also humble and empathetic. Lara was written as a morally grey character but you still understood her motivations and she has a redeeming arc throughout.

The ending was bold and it was a risk, but I think it worked. It gave the necessary depth to the story and I'm excited for book 2.

The ending is a bit brutal and it does end on a cliffhanger.

finally got to read this one after following the hype on bookstagram for quite some time. the first chapter was quite intense and got me hooked immediately. i admire the complex world-building and the characters. aren and lara and many of the side characters are very well crafted, though i wished to learn more about some of them (e.g. jor, taryn, annah). the character development of, particularly, lara was incredible and i loved how the story and her views on everything evolved. however, i got one word for you: miscommunication. gosh, how i hate this trope. i mean, i totally expected to happen exactly what happened but, needless to say, i hated it and it had me almost throw my kindle aggressively and incredibly frusted against a wall. i'm super excited about the second book and hope everything will be resolved then.

Wow. The suspense of the book was almost too much to handle. This book was incredible. I'll be reading the other books this author writes and has written.

Read: March 2021

I sped through this and enjoyed it. I love the concept of a secretive kingdom (kind of gave off Night Court vibes), but really would have liked a map to better visualize everything (my ebook did not have one). Lara's development is good, love hidden spy type characters! It felt like romance was pushed aside for sexual attraction, though. Looking forward to seeing if the sequel changes that!

CW: death, violence, poisoning, sexual content, past physical abuse
