fluffy and cute! the aquarium club setting is different enough for me to give this 4 stars instead of 3 despite not a ton happening in the first volume. it has one of my least favorite yuri tropes of miscommunication, but it's much less dramatic than i've seen in other yuri. bonus points for no "b-b-b-but we're both girls!!!!!!!" freakout when the crush starts becoming more apparent.

Loved it! The art is very clean and I enjoy the simplicity of the story :)

a budding relationship between two girls who also happen to be the only two members of the school aquarium club. their relationship develops around an elusive salamander and mutual confusion and insecurity about their feelings towards each other.
unfortunately, it was difficult to tell the characters apart and i was expecting more complex emotional and narrative development. it's a pleasant, unoffensive, lighthearted read.
i don't think i'll be reading volume two but i appreciate that makoto hagino based the aquarium club on a real school's aquarium club.

A Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow, Vol. 1 by Makoto Hagino is a sweet yuri slice-of-life manga. Amano Konatsu is the new girl in town, living with her aunt while her father works overseas. The first day in her new town, Amano stumbles onto an event at her new school held by a club that runs a small aquarium. Koyuki Honami is the head of the club, and Amano can’t help but be instantly drawn to her and her fascinating club.

This is a slow paced yuri slice of life manga that follows Amano as she begins a new school, makes new friends, joins a club, and starts to fall for her club president. The majority of each chapter is set in Amano’s new school, either during classes or after school during club activities. However, we do see more of the new town Amano has moved to in later chapters.

Amano and Koyuki have certain personality traits that overlaps—both are fairly quiet and shy, for example. How these aspects of their personalities shape their actions can be different. Certain situations are handled somewhat differently between the pair, though there are time they are very, very similar.

As one might expect with two shy characters, this is definitely a slow burn romance. Their relationship is sweet and wonderful to watch. How exactly their friendship and blossoming feelings play out within the next few volumes will be wonderful to watch. If a slow burn yuri manga is something you’re looking for, A Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow, Vol. 1 by Makoto Hagino is something you’ll want to check out.

I received this manga from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Rep: sapphic romance

Okay this series already melted my heart - it is a sweet story about two lonely girls who become friends. When Konatsu transfers to a new town, she once again has to face the hard task of making friends which is difficult for her shy nature. She comes across Koyuki, who manages the school's aquarium club, who seems cool and collected. Konatsu makes friends with another outgoing and friendly classmate, but Koyuki having left an impression on her makes her want to join the aquarium club. Koyuki, meanwhile is freaking out about having a friend - she is so cute when flustered, honestly! - because most of the students are a bit distant to her, on account of her being a teacher's daughter and thus expected to be a model student. A repeated motif in this book was the story of an aloof salamander who has to come out of its hiding place, and it is projected onto the girls, both of whom find themselves coming out of their shell for the other one. While this was only the first volume, already the story has gripped me and I await anxiously for the development of the romance!

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Viz Media LLC, via Edelweiss.

'A Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow' is a very cute manga about a new transfer student, and the shy beauty she falls for at the school aquarium club; it's a really nice dance of the two slowly getting closer to each other, and I'm interested to see how future volumes go.

solid start to a series!

Solid 3.5
I enjoyed A Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow. Both heroines were likable and relatable. The romance - or what I think will be a romance - develops quickly and has a bit of feel of insta-love, but I assume that will be explained in future volumes. The setting of a school aquarium club is fun and unusual.
I am curious to see how things continue.
