I listened to the audiobook, and it was a case study in how a bad narrator can absolutely fucking ruin a good story. Listening to this was an absolute slog, even when the story itself was really good. There were some great emotional bits in the story that were totally ruined by the author’s completely monotone voice. I re-learned a valuable lesson: If it says “read by the author,” listen to a sample first, and be prepared to abort and read the text instead if it’s dreadful. Trudging through bad audio is just not worth the time you might save.

Wow! Extremely depressing plot about a large majority of a family dying from a gas leak….., but somehow written in a beautiful way. Each different perspective felt like an amazing short story. If it wasn’t such a depressing plot it would have been 5 stars for me.

This is a great book about a heartbreaking tragedy. However, for some reason, I picked it up thinking this would be one of my all-time favorites and I am disappointed because it didn't leave an impact on me. (This was very unexpected considering what the book is about.)

I'm giving it 3/3.5 stars because I didn't end up enjoying it as much as I would have liked to, though it is still a well-written book.

The multiple POV was well-done, but there were SO many that I found them all less deeply developed than I would have liked.

I liked the variety of characters and the way they got different and different-sized chunks of the story. Clegg does a really lovely job inhabiting the various characters and making them real. There's not so much a plot here as an untangling of different people and stories, but it's still touching and it pushes you forward. A lot of people have said they didn't really feel for the characters, but sometimes grief is a numbing thing that leaves you light and confused, and I think that is the effect the author was going for, and achieved. Plus at the end, I guarantee you'll want to call your parents, your significant others, your siblings, and that friend you argued with ten years ago, and that is as heavy an emotional effect as any.

I found this a really interesting book...I liked the different perspectives of each chapter and how they came together to give a fuller picture of so many different characters and situations. Some felt a little forced but overall a really engaging read.
