I think it's time to admit I might have more than just a professional interest in Mary Todd Lincoln. But with a life this undefinable and this unsolvable, how could I not? Carl Sandburg's incredible prose sure doesn't help matters. This book begins with the most stunning opening paragraph I have ever seen in a biography. I'm not sure I agree with every conclusion here, but I've never felt sure I could trust any book about Mary Todd Lincoln, no matter if they praise or condemn her. This book may do both. It may do neither. I'm not sure which I myself would do. I'm a little obsessed.

This was the only biography of Mary Lincoln my library owns. I chose to give up on it today. I read the actual story line the author wrote (which had some interesting choices in terms of what to focus on) but then the last half of the book were the letters she used as her sources. I couldn't bring myself to read all of that, especially when I have so many other books on my plate. I'd love to hear if anyone knows of a better Mary Lincoln biography.
