i wanted to read this because i'm (somewhat distantly) related to the clutters, but an old book + man author = so. slow. and. exhausting. to. read.

Psicológicamente atrapante, el ritmo de una novela de acción mezclado con crónica periodística. Es un libro que me hizo perder la noción del tiempo mientras lo devoraba, y conocer a esa gente involucrada en el caso como si fuesen mis propios conocidos.

For a long time I've wanted to read this book. Of course I'd heard about it and the out-sized ego - and skill - of the writer, but I still wasn't completely prepared. What Capote did that I find brilliant is that he removed himself from the narrative. His prose are still strong, even masterful, but it's all about the murderers, the victims, and the survivors. He researched every facet of the town and the journeying of Dick Hickok and Perry Smith.
Given that the outcome is known from page one, Capote still managed tension and suspense throughout the book. He still managed to make the protagonists, cold-blooded murderers, sympathetic. He still managed to make the final executions sorrowful. All the while he told a gripping story based completely in fact.
I'm happy I finally read this milestone book. I now have something to measure all crime stories against.
