A Sangue Frio by Maria Isabel Braga, Truman Capote

I’m feeling a little bogged down. I famously dislike true crime, and while I find it immensely helpful to read the “original” true crime novel, I can’t escape the gloomy acknowledgement that this really happened. It’s tragic and horrible, and while I appreciate what Truman Capote is doing (and the writing is phenomenal if a little melodramatic), it feels kind of gross to relish in the drama when 4 lives were cruelly cut short. This may be a situation where I find the story of the story more interesting, but I do owe it Capote to read some of it, so here we are.

A morbid telling of a vicious slaughter that dared to humanize and almost sympathize with the killers. It does offer an interesting perspective into the minds of all involved and adjacent to the deceased. What is true and what is fantasy from this, I couldn’t fully tell you. And I’m still unsure if I liked that aspect of this novel or not.

Really interesting to see the birth of a genre but so sad to see the death penalty applied with such ease to people who obviously were not well.

I think the writing was amazing and I was immersed in the story but I think the story can be mentally and emotionally draining if you are not in the right mindset. The murder of the Clutter family is gruesome and can be difficult to grasp considering the motive was close to nothing in the grand scheme. While I would recommend the book to someone who loves true crime I would not recommend it to those who are easily empathetic and quick to feel another's emotions as this story can hurt your mental health.

The best work of true crime I have ever read. Absolutely tragic story but told in the most brilliant way.
