Singing Away the Hunger is a series of stories about her life told by the author, a Lesotho woman, to a visiting American scholar. The stories aren’t strictly chronological, but often circle back on themselves, and sometimes the same event is covered from more than one angle. It’s a story filled with much hardship and plenty of hard work. It’s also a story filled with resilience, love and hope. Particularly interesting to me was learning a little about traditional Basotho customs, beliefs and ways of life. The pros and cons of living and working in apartheid-era South Africa versus Lesotho was enlightening.
Moderate: Child death, Death of parent, and Racism
