I’m basically reusing a review across this series, as it seems to hold as things go on. Overall it’s a bunch of highs and lows. Some books are consistently excellent (Marauders, X-Force, Wolverine, and it looks like X-Factor & Hellions will join that group) while some are middling to mediocre (Excalibur being the worst of the lot, plus Cable being so-so, and the main X-Men book varying in quality from one issue to the next). I’m still reading, so the overall whole is quality, and the whole setting that they’ve established is still unique and intriguing. It’s like a house of cards that we know is doomed to fall eventually, it’s just a question of when and how)

Good installment and it's really starting to feel like the problems facing everybody's favourite mutants are starting to intensify, so fun for us readers for sure! The stand-out issue for me in this latest volume was The Hellions - Really funny writing and an intriguing cast of characters, I can't wait to see where this one is going!

One kind of shitty thing for me was the inclusion of Giant-Sized Nightcrawler #1, not because it wasn't a good story or anything like that, but because I also purchased the Giant-Sized X-Men collection with all of the specials Hickman wrote, and this story is in there as well and that just sort of bothers me. I mean, they have to know that us completists are going to buy everything to do with Hickman's run on the X-Titles, and I don't like being made to buy the same thing twice. I didn't let it impact my rating of this volume, but it really did annoy me.

A mixed bag of issues finds itself not just leaning but about to fall on some thin premises. X-Force is currently my least favorite of the X-books. After an interesting Colossus/Domino issue a couple of trades ago, the series is just running around in circles with the characters repeating their intentions and their tragic back stories ad nauseum. Also, if I didn't know better I would suspect [a:Benjamin Percy|215907|Benjamin Percy|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1362111803p2/215907.jpg] has never read a comic with Jean Grey in it before, as she behaves wildly inconsistently with every portrayal I've ever read. And I've read nearly all of the sixty years of X-related books. I also went from really hating the art at the beginning of the issue, where it seemed pretty reminiscent of "Fallen Angels" to just not really enjoying it. 1/5 stars.

I have previously mentioned my disinterest in the magic portion of the Marvel Universe, particularly as it pertains to Excalibur, but [a:Tini Howard|14205385|Tini Howard|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1573146594p2/14205385.jpg]'s dialogue and character work on this issue won me over. I do feel this series is getting better with every issue, and I'm not dreading the impending X Of Swords crossover event as much as I was earlier. I'm also enjoying [a:Marcus To|3122242|Marcus To|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1353499634p2/3122242.jpg]'s use of facial grammar and body language in this title. 4/5 stars.

Apart from familiar [a:Alan Davis|15089|Alan Davis|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1522157724p2/15089.jpg] art, and one scene of plot development, the Giant Sized Nightcrawler issue felt like tangentially related filler rather than a showcase of Nightcrawler. While they've shown up a couple of times in X-history, I'd forgotten what the Sidr were, and doing research didn't make me nostalgic for their involvement. I'm assuming [a:Jonathan Hickman|356424|Jonathan Hickman|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1356400161p2/356424.jpg] is going to use them again sometime during this Dawn Of X era, otherwise this issue was a joyless waste of time. 2/5

I think The Hellions has potential. I'm not in love with the first issue, but it has some interesting ideas, particularly about how Empath fits into mutant culture. Quippy Sinister and Babysitter Psylocke may take some getting used to, but I did chuckle at some Sinister lines, though not as often as I rolled my eyes at Overreacting Cyclops, who I was hoping not to encounter again. 3/5

New Mutants continues to come in second to the flagship title for my favorite part of Dawn Of X. I'm enjoying the integration of New Mutants and Generation X's lineups, as well as how the previously seperated halves of this team are just now forming one cohesive unit. The coloring and thick lines of [a:Flaviano|18266172|Flaviano|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png]'s art isn't my favorite style but it worked really well in this particular issue. He seems destined to draw an amazing horror book. 4/5

I'm still enjoying this format of collecting the X-books, but I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone start with this volume.

The series is still picking up. Keeps adding new story beats. I cannot explain how much I like that Marvel is releasing the X-men stuff like this.
