I found this an exciting idea at first glance, and I really liked Logan, but I found it very trope-filled and predictable, with the whole necromancer bad thing
and the big bad being a necromancer
.

I found even the characters could be very trope-like; Logan the barbarian is all angry and is not the smartest, while Pie the bard is super horny
and is secretly a rogue with a tragic backstory
.

I still found it enjoyable and had an alright time reading, but I won't be rereading this ever.

This was just okay. I didn’t like it nearly as much as I hoped. The humor didn’t quite land for me - it’s full of juvenile behavior and quippy one-liners that were more eye-rolly than funny. My biggest problem however was with the countess. Her constant sexual harassment of the male characters was treated as a silly antic and handwaved away. I found it genuinely uncomfortable to read, and I think it’s what ultimately ruined the book for me. A pity, because she would have been a great character otherwise.

The things that did work for me worked well enough I suppose, though I still felt like I had one foot out the door the entire time. I liked the established relationship and age diversity of the characters - very refreshing! - and the overall feeling of warmth and vibrancy that flows through the text. Despite the problems, I think the author shows some promise, and I’ll be keeping an eye out for whatever comes next.
