Even when older, I love these books. Ally Carter, similarly to authors Meg Cabot and Deb Caletti, has a gift for wittily portraying the teen psyche. What appeals most to me about her books is the rich setting of the Gallagher Academy and all things spy; the vocabulary used, details about the school and the profiles of its faculty, and Cammie Morgan's professional, 16-yr. old-spy attitude offer a humourous take on what it would be like to grow up cultured in the world of espionage.
Obviously, the tone of the series is lighthearted and at times dramatic--as expected in any story that focuses on the drama of sophomore girls in boarding school. The drama compliments, rather than outweighs, the bit of action and suspense/mystery that unfolds as Cammie faces obstacles both professionally (clearing her name of breaching security/finding out who's the double agent) and emotionally (dealing with post-breakup and intrusion of hottie albeit mystery-man Zach). While there's the definite bloom of teenage crushing--some "kissage," some waist-grabbing mid-dance and hand-holding--the author keeps it to a nice minimum, teasing rather than overwhelming.
A great read for upper elementary/middle school age, though enjoyable by anyone open to a play on ideas and girl-power ;)

I thought the second book was better than the first. It's a quick read, and I couldn't put it down. I'm glad I thought ahead and already have the 3rd book ready.
