Part 1 (Animals) was good, the rest didn't really grab me. I found the narrative meandering. There is a more heavy focus on the philosophical or religious rather than the scientific meaning, which was not evident from the cover/back of the book.

I really enjoyed the focused chapters of the first half, exploring the lives the organisms of the tide pool as well as the discussion on the author's role in creating artificial pools in the local landscape. I think where this book started to lose me was when it started shoehorning in philosophy. The connections seemed tenuous at times and often a shallow reading at best.

somehow the perfect merging of many of my interests—marine life, philosophy, gaelic—so i am a huge fan. very brilliant.

A fascinating read. Adam Nicholson can see a World in a Grain of Sand. And a Heaven in a rock pool. And share it beautifully.

There’s like no direction or aim for this book.

This one was a little uneven for me. Loved the in-depth explorations of the lives of the different organisms, was willing to entertain the dives into Greek philosophy, but it fully lost me on the Scottish history and language stuff. I know dude is writing about some tide pools he made in Scotland but it was the tide pools I was here for, not the Scotland. Wish it had been more focused, but still pleasant.
