Honestly so fond of Brigg's earlier stuff before she hopped on the girl-werewolf train. It feels to me like it's got more imagination.
I mean, not without flaws! But I really like her earlier stuff.

The writing was a bit dry and at times I struggled to keep reading even though the concepts presented were intriguing and fun to read about. At the end though it felt like this was either a first book trying to set up a new series where thought was really only paid towards getting you to understand the world OR it was a really long attempt to create a groan-worthy one-liner punchline of "OH! Yeah, that line was at the beginning. AND it is how the book ends. Ahh...I get it..."
Still I did get through it. Wished there was more actual dragon action than was present. Perhaps that is coming in the next book?
Just tried to get through this on audiobook and only made it about halfway. This story is rather slow and I couldn't get settled into the audiobook reader's voices for the characters so I dropped it.

Patricia Briggs is fast becoming one of my favorite sci-fi/fantasy authors. I love her Mercedes Thomspon series, and I feel that this new series will quickly become a favorite as well. The early parts of this book, establishing the world and the characters, is a little slow, but they are given just the right amount of development and backstory before the book quickly becomes glued to your hands. I literally could not put this down last night, and so I stayed up waaaay later than I wanted to because I just had to keep reading one more chapter.

I'm still being consistently surprised by how much I enjoy Patricia Briggs' work. Starting on the second book in the series now.

This is a well-written, traditional fantasy by one of my favorite authors, Patricia Briggs. The well-drawn characters and plot separate it from the run-of-the-mill fantasy books with dragons in them. Recommended for fans of the genre.
