Not even 10 pages in and FMC has already done something stupid and author tells us she’s a master of kung fu, even better than the local grandmaster. Yeah, no, I’m out.

Can’t wait for Book 2 to come out this year. I need to watch Mulan now AND the live Mulan. I really love how they talked about the true story of Mulan in the ending. I learned a different story than what’s shown in the movies - it’s super sad.

Her father is a D I C K!!!!! Her mother???? B I T C H!!!!
Fuck both of them!

The dragon spirit? Black magic?

I want to string up every man in this book by the balls and use their bodies as piñatas, is that too much to ask?

great mulan retelling if mulan was not motivated by honor but sheer ambition. unconventional fmc mixed with dragons and forbidden magic, feminine rage and morally grey mmc's - liked it, will definitely check out book 2

A dark retelling of Mulan which thankfully does not have too much romance in it. Quite predictable and ya at times, but overall, a great read!

Loved the ending, it really lands the whole thing and was 100% needed. Can also wholeheartedly see why this is a duology and I'm intrigued to discover how it all concludes.

From zero to hero is one of my favourite tropes, so watching Meilin hone her skills was right up my alley. The subtle nods to Mulan were also great.

I will say the story dipped for me during the 50-75% mark. Enough to knock my overall rating down as by the end, I was slogging through the story a bit.

Slow, plodding story. Lost interest around the 60% mark but stuck with it to see how things ended. The magic system wasn't explained or executed very well. The MC went from trusting no one to blindly trusting people (so annoying.) The love story part seemed jarring and just strange.

Not my usual genre but this book had me hooked. Although, Meilin being both so distrustful of everyone but also so trustful of the wrong people drove me nuts.
