I have no idea why people are calling this slow — it was WAY too fast for me. The characterizations felt immature and the writing style certainly didn’t help either. This definitely leans more YA/NA than adult fantasy, and is also VERY clearly a Mulan retelling.
That being said, all my cons might be pros for other readers. This was just not for me.

As someone familiar with the Disney version of Mulan’s story, I immediately caught onto this being a retelling. As far as where it is similar to or differs from earlier iterations of the story, I can’t say, but I did find this to be surprisingly similar to my childhood version at times. One key difference is the motivations; in this story, the protagonist’s motivation lies within her ambition rather than filial duty. I really liked those threads — a woman endeavoring to build a future for herself where she’s not subjugated — but felt that the execution was flawed. The characters weren’t well-constructed (whereas they’re a highlight in the Disney film), certain plot points and motivations felt flimsy, and it felt overly juvenile. 

All that said, I’d still recommend it to fans of the Disney movie who want a decent retelling.
