The Night Ends With Fire is a Mulan retelling. The writing and story sucked me in with the first page and didn't release me until the end. Speaking of the end I need the sequel like right now to see what happens next.

I got a little lost at times, but I don’t read fantasy often so it might just come with the genre. I really like the writers writing style. I think it’s a little cheesy at times (I’m swayed by Disneys Mulan) but I think overall it’s a good read and I’m excited for the next book.
I wasn't sure how I felt at first, but this was SO GOOD! I'm a sucker for a retelling, but this goes above and beyond that in my opinion. I'd recommend this to any fantasy fan.

I enjoyed this book, but could have liked it a lot more. I'm excited to read the sequel, but as it stands the ending was very unsatisfying. Not because it's sad, but because it comes so abruptly. It's set up but the tragedy doesn't hit me when I know there's more. It was such a non-ending. Just a "welp, this sucks. Better tune back in to see where this goes.
I really liked our MC. She's strong and flawed in realistic ways given her trauma, the way her society treats her, and the demon creature in her head. The biggest problem is that I never connected to any other characters. We didn't get enough time with her platoon for me to care when things go to shit, norfeel anything when the few left betrayed her . Sky could be interesting but there isn't enough scenes between them for me to care, especially during Sky's... moments.
All that being said, I'm invested in the story and really want to see what's coming. There were plenty of moments that really hit me, like Meilin's connection with various other women and the final confrontation with the antagonist. This book has strong themes about female ambition where the very concept of such a thing is blasphemy. How even the best of an oppressive group can fall to the prejudice they were raised under. How greed and revenge are strong, valid motivators, but you'll never feel fulfilled unless you find something else to satiate you.
