I stopped buying the main character somewhere between 50% and 75%. It was neat to see the legend of Mulan and the myth of the Four Guardians intertwined, but the execution overall, especially when combined with the love triangle, felt kind of... meh. There were a few things that could have added insight or interest, but they were either skipped over, or I missed their explanations (but I was on the lookout for them, so...).

This is truly one of my new favorite books! I initially picked up the book because of the cover and yes I know you shouldn’t judge a book by the cover but it’s just so pretty!! The book is a retelling of the mulan story but in a more realistic way while still being mystical and magical. I truly did not see the ending coming.

I figured it would end like a lot of the fantasy books where the girl and guy race off into the sunset and live happily ever after. This really doesn’t give the ending away but it might change what you think is going to happen.

Despite it not being what I thought it would be, the ending was perfect. It made me immediately need the second book which hopefully there is a second book! The book now sits on my shelf of personal favorites❤️❤️❤️❤️

is it really DNFing if you didn't really get into the first 20%? the vibes felt too similar to The Poppy War and Iron Widow and Daughter of the Moon.
