3.5 ⭐️ ~ absolutely loved that it was inspired by Mulan but I can’t stand love triangles and the FMC isn’t my favorite

This felt a little YA, but it’s summer and I’m into it. It hooked me at the beginning but halfway through became
girl-captive-in-chains as the main plot point
and lost me a bit. Liked it enough to read the second one though :)

I read this for the Heritage challenge for the Goodreads 2025 challenges.
I probably would have read this one on my own if it had not been a challenge book. But the challenge made me read it sooner than I would have. And I am really glad I did.
I will say that I listened to this book and the names were a little hard to keep straight at first

Overall this is a great Mulan retelling.

The book was a cross between Mulan and the Poppy Wars but not as well written. It got boring
