Hemingway declared, "All modern American literature comes from" Huck Finn. My thoughts? Well it was better than Tom Sawyer, but still not my cup of tea. I liked the character development of Huck (challenging norms in favor of self identification of what’s right and wrong) more than Tom’s (coming of age, leaving boyhood and learning to take responsibility).

I enjoyed this one more than Tom Sawyer, sorry Tom. The pacing was worlds better and the adventure was nonsensical and fun (ignoring the racism which is....a lot). While I understand this is a "product of its time" that excuse does fall flat in the face of stereotyping and racism included with every page. I'm glad I read these before diving into James I think they will add a layer to the story that I'll appreciate.

After not having known the stories of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn as a child, I have now read both novels and actually liked them. This one even more than Tom Sawyer, although I wouldn't recommend it to a child and the (older) accents were something to get adjusted to. It was indeed full of adventure, sometimes funny, sometimes tense...

The main purpose of reading the books was so that I can finally jump on the hype train and read "James" by Percival Everett and I am very keen to do so soon. Especially because of the clearly outdated use of racism without giving more context and explanation.
