Wilde dit boek graag eerst lezen voordat ik begin aan James van Percival Everett en daarnaast is dit ook wel een Amerikaanse klassieker die ik sowieso graag gelezen wilde hebben. Had wel veel moeite met het continue racistische taalgebruik en stereotyperingen, maar dat geeft wel Amerika uit 1884 weer... En wat een IRRITANT personage is die Tom Sawyer, vooral aan het einde was hij echt onverdraaglijk.

I read this alongside a reading guide to help engage me further, and then listened to a few analyses that helped explained the depth of this story. I think it's very clear that the reviews saying "it didn't age well" or was "racist" are completely missing the point and could benefit from sitting with this book and analyzing the deeper messages the author is trying to convey through these characters.
The heavy use of the n-word never got old, it continually made me incredibly uncomfortable whenever it was used, which was the point.
I think this is a good read especially when coupled with a guided discussion and analysis. Don't just read this and then move on!
