In which we get to spend some quality time with Chipmunk Hunk and Koi Boy (of course). And Doreen's roommate Nancy has no luck screaming at monkeys, but does gain a big fan for her Cat Thor fanfic. Also, butts are kicked.

Issue #5 takes place after Squirrel Girl got rid of Galactus, and opens with a splash page featuring some Fantastic Four members, some Avengers, some X-Men, and Squirrel Girl battling dinosaurs around the Statue of Liberty. The issue then goes inside the statue where several citizens are held hostage while all the action takes place in the background/off-panel. The hostages tell a half dozen different stories about S.G., each of them in a different style and with different "facts."

Then issues #6–8 completes a 3-issue arc featuring Girl Squirrel, a superhero pet who turns out to be Ratatoskr, a Norse rodent who can mind-control people by playing up their deepest insecurities. S.G. makes two new friends, Chipmunk Hunk (who I thought was just a joke in the footnotes of an earlier issue) and Koi Boi, who join her and her college roommate, Nancy in protecting the bank where they caused damage in Vol. 1, beating up the Avengers, traveling to Asgard, and eventually defeating Ratatoskr.

Finally, the volume ends with three short stories (two 8-pagers and one 1-page story) from other comics—a GLX-Mas Special, "Eggnog, Toilet Paper, and Peace on Earth" from the Great Lakes Avengers where S.G. has to pick up a few last-minute grocery items (and defeat MODOK while she's at it); a Thing comic, "Last Hand" where S.G. and the GLA take part in a huge superhero poker game with cameos galore; and an Age of Heroes page "Nuts to This" where S.G. decides to leave her GLA so they can shine.

Loved all the stories (both the end of the first 8-issue run of "The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl" and the three extras) but the letters are still grating, as is the first page of each issue (a mock-Twitter page catching readers up on what happened in the last issue). I get why a summary might be important for a monthly comic, but it's annoying in a graphic novel. And the responses [a:Ryan North|45763|Ryan North|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1516738257p2/45763.jpg] & [a:Erica Henderson|375348|Erica Henderson|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1449194223p2/375348.jpg] write to their fans are just too happy and positive; maybe I'm a grinch, but it's hard to believe two people could be that excited for letter after letter talking about squirrels... (Although, I just noticed North is Canadian, so maybe he is that nice!)

If I could rate this 4.5* I would, but for now it settles back down into the 4* just because there were 11 pages that could have had more art/story wasted on these summaries/letters.

I have to be honest. I did not expect to like this graphic novel.

I really did pick it up on a lark, because I am trying to read more comics, and there's so much freaking history it's hard to know where to start. And how much history could I need for a comic based around a girl with radioactive squirrel powers (or whatever she has)?

Y'all.

I love this series so freaking much. ::facepalm::

There was a Buffy reference, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. AND CAT THOR. AND LOKI-AS-CAT-THOR.

COME ON.

Man, these are entertaining. (This one has a Xander from Buffy reference that made me laugh out loud.) I know nothing about the Avengers, or comics, or really anything about the superhero world in general, but I still enjoy it tremendously.

So I read this as an ebook on my phone and it's really not the best way to read a graphic novel, so maybe that coloured my opinion a bit. I like Squirrel Girl and her pals but I'm just not a huge fan of the 'super team-ups' and cameos that this one had a ton of. Except Cat Thor. Cat Thor forever.
