Good set of short series. I wish Attia Hosain had written more. I have read both of her books, this and Sunlight on a Broken Column. Only reason it is not 5 stars is because I preferred more short stories to others.

While I enjoyed some of the short stories in this collection, many of them were hard to read. I found myself confused at some of the stories and what they were trying to signify.

Some of my favourite include:

✨The First Party
✨After the Storm
✨A Woman and a Child

I really did enjoy these stories and how they represented the clash between East and West. Often these clashes could be seen in the way the characters interacted with another. I also enjoyed the conflict between traditional and modern and how this became apparent between a man and his new wife, for instance.

this group of short stories are some of the best i’ve read. the culture of desi people after the SWW is really shown through the explanation of tradition and culture. the constant relation to islam was also infortmative in understanding more about islam and how it effects tradition
