I read this book in two long sittings, trying to finish last-minute for a book club discussion, which I thought was one of the best our club has had to date. We agreed it's melodramatic at points, but pleasingly poetic, and contains plenty worthy of discussion.

I loved the idea of the "cemetary of forgotten books", a vault/labyrinth that plays a role in the story. And I like the way the starting mystery unravels across the life stories of several characters. It's a satisfying read.

I wept when I finished this because I knew I could never have that experience of reading it for the first time again. So beautiful.

it started out so good... for a second i really thought it would become a new favorite book because of the gorgeous prose and story BUT the length of the book and the misoginy completely ruined it for me. i just stopped caring and then it kinda became a chore to read... so that's disappointing but at least i have a few cool quotes i guess???

Well... I have to admit this was a page turner for me. Many things happening, very fast pace, engaging. atmospheric, taking place at a precise historical model, in a city that you feel pulsating. But thinking about it afterwards, it is somewhat cheap, in the sense that if you think about the plot with a cool mind, you must admit it is way over the top at many places.

Really, too much, c'mon. I don't want to give anything away here, because it is a thriller, and I hate it when reviews give anything away - but I wonder whether after you've read it you'agree with me, as you'll know what I am talking about... :-)

I recently reread this book, mostly via audio, and it just reaffirmed the fact that it is one of my all time favorites. The language throughout the book is absolutely amazing. I fell in love with it several years back and am now in love even more after hearing the audio version, which is done with a beautiful Castilian accent.

The story is actually a story within a story concept. Daniel finds the book The Shadow of the Wind, written by Julian Carax in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books. Yes, that's the opener, which hooked me immediately.

He then spends the story finding out more and more about this elusive author whose books seem to be getting torched. The characters are intricate and rich with more secrets than anyone could ever imagine. Dark and mysterious, filled with love and revenge.

I give this my highest rating... Amazing story.
