I went into this not really knowing anything except goth and lesbians and boy howdy did I get more than what I signed up for LOLOL. Was absolutely not expecting this to be kind of a fantasy/sci-fi book with necromancers and sword fighters in space but it works somehow?? I really love the writing style and how funny Gideon's narration is. Also was not expecting the enemies to lovers (??) situation but it's one of my favorite tropes so I'm not complaining. The ending hit me like a truck, like I feel like I should have expected it but I did not and I was extremely upset (in a good way, but jesus damn...). Honestly the worldbuilding was kind of confusing because not very much is explained, but I was having so much fun that I didn't really mind being confused.

This book hurt my feelings.

I also have QUESTIONS, I took a break for a few weeks to nurse my emotional wounds and then tackled the next book in the series. As far as how this worked within a series:  it felt like a whole book on its own, with more mysteries and questions and next steps to pursue. So, yay, that's the best!

Fair warning. It's a very big and very messy and very vast unverse with deep as fuck lore. The prose is also complicated and dense. I recommend just shrugging and going with it  - it flows well and makes a weird sort of sense if you just let it take you along.

It's science fantasy, necromancers in space exploring ancient ruins trying to solve complicated mysteries to ascend to near godhood in order to help fight to save the universe and humanity. So it's huge in scope but also takes place in a very limited space with limited characters.

The lesbian aspect gets hyped up a lot but there's not smut.

ugh i don't know where to start with this review....
it's basically the hunger games in an agatha christie murder mystery but really badly executed....

things i liked:
  • gideon, our main character. she's snarky and to the point
  • the sixth house (sience for the win)
  • the general magic system.

things i didn't like:
  • the writing. (the author is using a lot of "grown-up words" which doesnt help you understand the book amy better.
  • the world building (if you can even call it that) we're in a house, on a planet, the house has doors and rooms. but mostly doors. also there are skeletons, and necromacers. and nine houses. why? who knows....
  • the naming of the characters (everyone -even REALLY unimportant characters have like 3-5 different names and while
    they're being killed off
you're just too busy trying to remember who that is to give a f*ck.
  • and this might just be about the marketing - but i feel VERY iffy about how this book is promoted as "enemies to lovers" when it is absolutely a story about abuse. also wtf about the ending.
not here for the romantasized abuse!

so basically it's a book about some characters in a house and one is a murderer. also there is necromancy and swords.
