what the fuck. how am i supposed to move on with my life after that ending? WHAT DO YOU MEAN GIDEON DIES???
This was just breathtaking! I have never read anything quite like it.
I came here for Gideon that conquered me in that very first line, only winning more and more of my affection as the book went on, and stayed for literally everything else.
Let's already acknowledge the elefant in the room. No one explains ANYTHING of what's going on. You get some basic explanations here and there but they are diagetic and therefore don't explain stuff that the characters of that world should already know. Personally I loved it. I love when a book doesn't explain but instead let you understand things. Let me reach my own conclusions! Everything is a clue on the world and you can either catch it or forget about it and just go with the flow. If you're not big on world building and magic and necromancy (I mean you probably should be into this stuff if you want to read Gideon, buuut) there's also:
The characters! Every single one of them has a distinct personality and they never feel forced, they never feel like they're reading a script, they never feel like they're doing things for plot's sake. They genuinely feel like people, the dialogues in particular are so stupid and dry (in a good way) they're extremely believable. One of the few books that absolutely nailed how real people talk.
And how could I not talk about Gideon and Harrow? Their relationship is complicated, it's messy, it's hilarious and frustrating in a way, I loved every single one of their interactions. You finish reading and they feel like old friends, it's a little sad.
Great characters, great writing, great plot. I finished this book in 3 days (it usually takes me at least a week even with stuff i really like) because I was obsessed with it and literally couldn't wait any longer to know what happened next. An easy 5 star :)
