I adore this book. The wit and the story are fascinating, and I find myself attached to each character.

This book made me laugh and gawk and cry my eyes out. In short, it was perfection. I will say I was confused as hell for the first 30-40% of the book because of esoteric necromancy, insane world building, and a devilishly well-wrought unreliable narrator. Of course I’m going to be confused- Gideon is a himbo, not a necromancer! Spectacular. I would HIGHLY recommend the audiobook for this novel. The voice actress is awesome and gives everyone such beautifully unique voices that really do Muir’s work justice. Take it from me: start your pride month out right with lesbian necromancers in space!

The reviews for this book didn’t lie, it was really funny. I love the “drop you in the middle of the world, no exposition, learn the world as the characters live it” type of storytelling. Which at times leaves you questioning a bit as to what is going on but also doesn’t ever completely lose you haha it is a really interesting world. After finishing the book and reading the notes at the end, I wanted to immediately read it again haha which I will do once I buy the 2nd book. The only issue I had with the book was the names, it was often hard to keep track of who was who because each person was referred to by like 3 to 5+ different names. And there are 9 houses, each with at least 1 necromancer and 1 cavalier…so a lot to keep track of haha

I loved the world-building in this novel - i'm a sucker for stories where magic and tech co-mingle. Space ships + necromancy FTW! It has great queer representation.

And yet. The plot was pretty standard, with a Chosen One With Mysterious Origins starring in a retelling of And Then There Were None. Even though the action ended at a satisfying moment, the epilogue seemed to exist solely to set up the next book.

My biggest problem is with the slang used by the main character, Gideon. it is very 21st century, very now. Maybe it will be explained in the sequel. I just wanted to like this novel more than I did.

Not lying to myself that I’ll go back to it. Was not clicking.

this book is so strangely funny and morbid and haunting and intense in its intimacy between characters and horrible in its refusal to pull punches that i genuinely don't know how to give this a proper review other than pointing at the five star review and the fact that i immediately bought the second book
