Funny well built and gross with a fair amount of set up but wonderful action-packed payoff.
Horror at its finest, especially in that last quarter of the book. I loved getting to know Gideon and Harrow. Gideon had a real bite to her that was just so fun to read. I think my big issue was really just that it was hard to keep up with that many characters and I felt pretty confused throughout the whole book. I feel like I need to read the whole thing again just because there was so much I didn’t follow. Some of my favorite parts of the book were when we finally started getting some backstory on Harrow, the Ninth House, and the Locked Tomb. It feels like there’s good set up for book two to be right up my alley.
What the fuck what the fuck WHAT THE FUCK
Edit: okay, I've calmed down. Time for an actual review
Characters? Top notch, I loved all of them, I would have killed for many of them and Gideon? Marry me.
Worldbuilding? The book definitely doesn't hold your hand, a lot of worldbuilding is derived from context clues, but it worked. I wasn't too invested in it, but it was still very cool.
Plot? Idk man, a lot happened but at the same time it kinda didn't, and then the last like 150 pages are just a constant stream of "holy shit what the fuck holy shit what the fuck holy shit etc." That is to say, not terribly well paced, but the vibes even it out.
Speaking of.
The vibes? Immaculate. This is some of the funniest shit I've ever read. Gideon's inner narration is perfect, it doesn't fit the overall aesthetic at all, but it's amazing and I would not trade it for anything. Gideon spends quite a lot of time just walking around a house and talking to people, but she makes it fun to read.
All in all I loved it so much and I am not at all scarred from that ending. Nope.
