I didn't read this book for a long time because I felt like it wouldn't live up to the hype around it, and I was correct! Trying not to hold that against it:
The tone is a little jumbled. It's trying to be funny, but the stakes are too high for me to laugh about it. The enemies-to-lovers transition is unconvincing. It never feels like they hate each other and it never feels like they love each other.
I think also the book suffers from Gideon's passivity? She makes very few decisions throughout the course of the book and is basically entirely uninterested in the mystery of the book until people start dying. This makes sense from her character's perspective, but makes for a lot of boring chapters while action is happening off-screen.
Which is all to say: it's fine. A perfectly serviceable space opera murder mystery with more gore than the genre warrants. I'm just trying to find the quality that everyone else loved so much + coming up empty, so this review is more negative than it otherwise would be.

I tried to reread this to see if I wanted to read the rest of the series and it's just not my thing.

I already loved the book and wanted to re-experience it again through audio. The narrator was FANTASTIC! She also really helped with the pronunciation of the weird names.
