this book is not for everyone (dense, tough worldbuilding, little explained directly, too many names) but it is for me. just for me, actually. thank you for keeping me in your heart mrs muir <3
(really beautiful writing with similes i've never seen before, vivid like a dream, main character to die for. people have shit to say about the enemies to lovers trajectory - i thought it was masterful and more convincing than most romances i've read in speculative fiction. it's not even necessarily a romance. manages to be something more in the full sense of the words. but more than anything, this book is SO FUN!! it reads, as sb else said, like a video game, or for me personally it was like an anime. and the action scenes were so slick. idk, i rly loved it.)

Huh. I’m kind of stumped on this one. You know how people say, “This book should be a movie,”? Well, Gideon the 9th should be a video game. Tons of puzzles, side quests, and battles, but I still feel like I don’t know what’s going on with their world. The characters are extremely well versed in their world and the challenges they face, but they do little to let us in with them, which is interesting. The religion in this world is so strange but also somehow so familiar. I’ll read the next one, but I’m not really invested, more so curious.

Nice to see a main character that isn't the most powerful person in the book
Thoroughly enjoyed it!

DNF

made me feel just as insane the second time around as it did the first time! i’ll probably do another full reread of my physical copy at some point because i have so many more thoughts and caught onto So Much Foreshadowing so i need to make annotations to refer back to, especially for whenever AtN comes out.

camilla hect i am free whenever. come home i miss u.

also
how did i not realize gideon quotes the bible at harrow at the end?? and also WHY did she quote the bible at her, how could she POSSIBLY know the book of ruth????
i’m thinking about many things but that specifically stood out to me. also also this is something i’ll have firmer thoughts about/evidence toward after my physical reread but
is gideon necromantic? are we going to find out she does in fact have necromantic capability in her body, especially as the child of god? i don’t know how likely it is but i did find myself wondering about it on a couple of different occasions based on things that seemed to maybe support that idea.

I didn't read this book for a long time because I felt like it wouldn't live up to the hype around it, and I was correct! Trying not to hold that against it:
The tone is a little jumbled. It's trying to be funny, but the stakes are too high for me to laugh about it. The enemies-to-lovers transition is unconvincing. It never feels like they hate each other and it never feels like they love each other.
I think also the book suffers from Gideon's passivity? She makes very few decisions throughout the course of the book and is basically entirely uninterested in the mystery of the book until people start dying. This makes sense from her character's perspective, but makes for a lot of boring chapters while action is happening off-screen.
Which is all to say: it's fine. A perfectly serviceable space opera murder mystery with more gore than the genre warrants. I'm just trying to find the quality that everyone else loved so much + coming up empty, so this review is more negative than it otherwise would be.
