first off: that deducted .25 is for the problems i had with the writing style. among a fantastic amount of designating nouns for characters there were just too many instances of an unclear "she" that made me frown too hard to set aside. otherwise: WHAT A FANTASTIC BOOK! i'll not lose too many words to praise the incredibly captivating and fascinating plot as well as straightforward yet mysterious and unique world-building and instead sing songs about the Amazing cast of characters. with a set-in-stone structure of necromancer and cavalier, one could never expect nor fathom the sheer variety and contraries found in those relationships. each pair, couple, and the one trouple offered – independently from their sympathies – an array of interesting and multi-layered stories that made, despite it all, every character enjoyable and even lovable. for that, it is the world-building that needs to be praised again. the complexities of the characters tie the reader to Gideon, our main character who watches and understands for us, and whose reactions are so human, frail, entertaining, headstrong and annoying that she becomes one of the funnest narrators and most compelling protagonists whose story i have followed along in a long time. her preferences and sensibilities are real and become the reader's, and her fate a thread i hang on. i believe in her. she's so cool.
