I was so convinced this book was going to be a 5* read when I picked it up, and maybe I got my expectations too high and that's why I felt a little disappointed by it
The start of this book and the premise is so interesting, but becomes very quickly so confusing to follow and quite messy. I don't usually mind books that start confusing as long as things start to make sense, but nothing ever did fully make sense
The writing and plot was very messy, and even though this story is set in what should be such a cool universe, there is absolutely zero world-building, which this book desperately needed in my opinion and would have made this book so much better.
Also Gideon is such a cool/unique MC, but she feels so passive for most of this book- things are just happening to her and around her, despite us following the story along in her head the whole time. Only right at the end does she have some impact on the story and the ending didn't really have a big impact on me, because we learned barely anything about Gideon the whole book! Again, so much character depth and world building was sorely missing from this book for me to rate it any higher.
This book is just an amalgamation of messy plot and lacking sorely in other areas.
There is still something about this book that I enjoyed- I did enjoy Gideon, Harrow and a couple of other intriguing characters, and I may pick up book 2 eventually as there were elements to this one I did enjoy. But ultimately I was really let down by what could have been such a cool story.
