I had my problems with this, mainly that the characterisation of Gods in the opening pages seems at odds with the rest of the book. They’re treated like office workers, Death is called in and fired, Taxes has a corner office, etc. But as it progresses it’s fairly pantheistic, divinity being found in the things around us. A cigarette, a decaying temple, a crow at a funeral. That said: by the end, I didn’t care. It’s a beautiful book, both in writing and in art, and it only gets more so as it goes on. Perhaps getting increasingly more ethereal as it went on was the point, that we’re following a character who saw life and death as mundane and comes to understand that it’s a miracle. I will read it again.

I really enjoyed the majority of this miniseries. The reason I’m giving it 3.5 stars though is because I was quite disappointed by the ending. I feel like the story and world built was too complex to resolve in five issues. To be honest, I didn’t realize when I started that this was a miniseries. I really enjoyed issues 1-4 but the fifth one felt extremely rushed in my opinion. I also do not understand how people continued to die after Laila got fired. I expected it to be explained eventually but it wasn’t. Finally, I also felt like Laila was the only character who really had much depth. I was looking forward to learning more about the mysterious god of life but we never did, and we didn’t really learn much about Darius until the info dump in issue #5. The art on the other hand, was absolutely spectacular. I honestly am happy I read this series for the art alone. I will absolutely be reading more comics drawn by Filipe Andrade.

Believe the hype! I now wish I'd bought the hardcover edition because it's going on my all-time favorites shelf.
