Something I enjoy about a piece of writing above all else is whether it gives me something to think about that I haven't thought about before. Reflecting on the person I was last summer, this book came at the perfect time. Dabiri's insistence on coalition and the falseness of "white" and "black" were definitely missing from much of what was widely circulated and what I consumed last year. This book was a lot more intellectually powerful and historically driven than the title and cover suggest... The bit about shrooms kind of came out of nowhere though!

Even though this is a short book, it is so beautifully written it took me some time to get through it.  Emma Dabiri wrote a fantastic book here and I have to say I've spent more time thinking about the book than I did reading and listening to it!  It's really made an impact on me.

Emma Dabiri also narrates the audiobook and she does a fantastic job doing so.  I admit I love her accent, even though I know she's had it all her life.
