Very well written crime. Loved the story and the plot. Especially liked the length of the book. Not too long and complicated.

I really liked the sense of setting and atmosphere throughout the story. I really didn't like the character work. Most of the characters felt stale and flat, and it felt like the author has a list of characteristics for everyone, and just reads over the list before they write each scene. The conflict between different bullet points on the list, and the conflict between bullet points, and the conflict between those characteristics and the plot are never really addressed in any way.

Things I liked about this book: the Icelandic setting, the hidden depths of the central character, the unfolding mystery. It didn't seem like an obvious set up - I didn't suspect the culprit until a very short time before the revelation (but murder mysteries are not a huge part of my usual reading list so regular mystery buffs might have seen it coming sooner) and the ending was a surprise also.
