4.3/5 My favorite summer collection book which was unexpected even though I had already read this book twice.
I guess I decided to skip the other summer collection books. I have no idea when I started reading this but I’ll be lucky if it’s the only book I read this month.
05/13/21 I think Kristen is the most complex of the girls. Again, favorite of the summer collection. It will be interesting to see her character older.

I love this one, with one left in the series I can easily say that Kristen is my favorite in the Clique Summer Collection. I enjoyed every bit of it, I just wanted to join the Witty Committee the whole time.

Kristen is objectively the superior member of the Pretty Committee. I was thoroughly invested in her story (especially the Witty Committee) and it was really fun to read about her not in the context of the rest of the girls. The story was goofy and I loved her owning her smartness in this one. She was definitely the character I related to most when I was in middle school. Dune and Ripple were ridiculous and the whole skater/surfer dudes versus the country club members was iconic. Definitely the best book in the summer collection and maybe one of the best in the series.

Massie is the first book of the Summer Collection, a group of side stories revolving around the members of the "Pretty Committee" from Lisi Harrison's "The Clique" series of popular and controversial books. Each of the Summer Collection titles follows one of the characters through her summer vacation in between the seventh and eighth grades (or, chronologically, in between Sealed With a Diss and Bratfest At Tiffany's in The Clique series).
Plot: Kristen Gregory has the distinction of being the only member of the Pretty Committee spending summer break stuck at home. Tutoring a young girl for pocket change, she soon falls head over heels for her charge's older brother. Only one very large obstacle stands in the way of Kristen finding love at home: Skye Hamilton, the "Alpha" of the outgoing eighth grade. In order to claim victory in love, Kristen will have to call upon her greatest and most intimate resource - her own secret clique, the Witty Committee!
Kristen is arguably the best in the entire Clique series of 20+ novels (including the Summer Collection). The narrative and writing are breezy and flows with a refreshing air not seen elsewhere in The Clique. Furthermore, Kristen shows off why she's easily the best and most positive role model in the series. Valuing her own intelligence and strong friendships based far outside the superficiality of the Pretty Committee, the novella carries to a very satisfying and positive conclusion.
Positive:
- Kristen steps up as a very positive role model and group leader
- enjoyable plot and narrative with some clever twists thrown in
- Reading level: Medeium-easy (2 to 3 hours)
Negatives:
- readers not familiar with The Clique lore will find themselves lost and unable to fully appreciate Kristen's relationships
Other similar works by the author:
- The Clique series, of which The Summer Collection compliments
- Alphas, a spin-off series revolving around Skye Hamilton which is set up in this novella
Similar works by other authors:
- The "Castle Heights" series (Cindy Ella, Geek Charming, Little Miss Red, Wicked Jealous) by Robin Palmer (superior writing and characterization, more positive messages)
- The "Yours Truly, Lucy B. Parker" series by Robin Palmer (superior writing and characterization, more positive messages)
- "The A-List" by Zoey Dean (flatter writing, even more negative messages and controversial content)
- "How My Personal, Private Journal Become a National Best-Seller" by Julia DeVillers (more positive messages)
- "Secrets of My Hollywood Life" by Jen Calonita (better narrative, more positive messages)
Other Notes:
- I recommend reading the entire Summer Collection in publication order (Massie, Dylan, Alicia, Kristen, Claire) and in-between Sealed With a Diss and Bratfest at Tiffany's in the main Clique series.
- The Clique's spin-off series, Alphas, is set up through the main plot of this novella.

12/19/2016 | I really enjoyed reading Kristen's summer. She had to go through a very different kind of struggle. It was a struggle to know who she really is. She had to know if she's the girl who her parents know she is; the girl who her friends know she is; or the true her, the one that doesn't have to lie and hide things from anyone.

I never realized how complex Kristen could be until I read this book. I was already aware of the fact that she could be very impressionable and I thought that made her fake. But she's not. She can be friends with all sorts of people and each group can bring out different parts of her, good and bad. I already read the first three 8th grade books and the first two Alpha books and I kinda wish I hadn't. There would've been a lot more ah ha moments if the summer collection was available to me earlier.

This is the first Clique book that lets Kristen really shine and be her own person, and the good parts of this book center around that. The crush-centered plot is really annoying though.
