Tinsel: The Girls Who Invented Christmas by Sibéal Pounder

A girl power redo of Christmas traditions crashes, its ideas too weighty to nimbly skim plot holes and its writing too uneven to capably string together its gender-realigned checklist into a coherent story. Middle grade is its marketed audience - yet its seesaw between whimsy and hysterical tones, emotional outbursts charged with physical violence by menacing males, young to old, is problematic and troubling - yet its real “reel” audience is media development scouts and its concept is ripe for acquisition with a solid rewrite. Tinsel would work well as an animated tale, its timely girls-can and eco-conscious messages told through vibrantly colorful scenes: Calling Ms. Claus for a miracle regifting.

Although this is aimed at middle-grade, I still adored it as an adult. It is full of magic and wonder and I know that my younger self would have been enamoured with this story! It is a wonderful reminder to young girls that they are capable of achieving anything. Blanche’s dialogue is surprisingly sassy and funny – I loved her as a character. There is so much imagination packed into this story, and I can imagine it would make an incredible movie! Eggnog the tree is one of the most adorable characters I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading and I would happily read a whole story just on him!

I thought this was a super fun take on the "santa clause" myth. I thought it was such a fun read and really turned the myth on its head. It just put a smile on my face. I really liked the wide cast of characters we meet. This book just made me smile. I really liked how this book focused on girls saving the world and the day and also how it handled harder topics like how girls are treated in the world. I really liked also the wide cast of characters and how this book generated the santa myth. Such a fun read and will def read more by this author in the future.

Christmas with a feminist twist. Loved it. Maybe a tad bit too silly, but if ever there was a time to be silly, Christmas is it!

I wanted to love this book, I think as a child I would have, but something didn't click for me.
It was a lovely magical book, with hints of the Christmas story as we know it sprinkled throughout.
However, the villain and his actions were so unbelievable (more so than all the magic!) that it took me out of the story.

Despite being in my early 20s and this book being aimed more for young teens, I loved every page. This book gives you the wonder of Christmas and leaves your heart feeling warm and full. A definite must-read for anyone wanting to get that festive feel!
