What a beautiful line, I feel like this book does such a good job of balancing the struggles Ludzio faces; on one hand, he struggles with a communist government and comes face to face with political connection's immense influence on quality-of-life, but, on the other hand, he also spends the whole book battling with his sexuality and the stigma around it. The history of the time was highlighted well despite Ludzio's sexuality and relationships taking the forefront, tastefully highlighted but not overpowering the main themes of the story. Janusz and Ludzio had a tragic ending, however, it leaves you feeling not so much angry and as hopeless, feeling like it was inevitable given the circumstances. Ugh just sooo well-written I really loved this book and I genuinely teared up a little at the end because I can't imagine the pain of losing your orignal home to leave for a place that can never truly become your new home- home becoming alien and the alien never quite becoming home. Like. Simply put..holy peak...also I js love when Polish people write about Poland because of all of the little references that you just can't exactly hit unless you're so deeply tied to the culture.

I could have kept reading for 100 more pages I was so invested in Ludwikâs story. I think the retrospective tone worked really really well here. Last few pages were so heartbreaking.
