emotional sad tense medium-paced

Ahhh this was sad but well paced, I found it fun to read again with a book was genuinely enjoying, and not finding it a chore. A decent amount of good historical fiction, with some ideas around queerness and academia under the Iron Curtain that began to be developed, whilst others could’ve been explore more. This is a short book, and you do feel that. Some tropes of queer sadness and love triangles felt a little trite, but still felt engaging enough due to the beautiful prose and a protagonist I genuinely rooted for. Time to watch Dua Lipa’s book club video!

it's funny given that this book praises "giovanni's room" and baldwin so much, given it's pro america and capitalism stance (not saying communism like anything else isn't above criticism but COME ON NOW!!! this felt more than just the grass is greener on the other side and read more as bootlicking the heel of amerikkka). i do not think baldwin would have good things to say about this given baldwin's politics lmao. i hear him rolling in his grave as i am writing this.

skip this and just read "giovanni's room" instead!

ok just read the interview with the author at the end of the book and he says he was raised in germany and his parents escaped poland. he is one of those, i see.... the quote "how could i have lives and loved in dignity in communist poland?" tells me all i need to know about this guy lol. as if being gay has ever been easy anywhere and as if being gay in the west, specifically america was so much better? 🤨

I needed a while to get into this book but then absolutely loved it - it touched me. I didn't know what this book was about when I started reading it but it was really good, was so positively surprised when finding out about the queer love story

uau… simplesmente uau
