Interesting World

It took me a long time to warm up to the characters in this story. But, I liked the fantasy storytelling.

So fun!

This book really picks up at about the 50% mark. By then I was hooked though! My first time reading this author and I really look forward to more. I had so much fun with this book and these characters!!

Good introduction to a hopefully great series. I like the characters and world building. The plot was on the simplistic side but still had enough swerves and double backs to make it fun.

I look forward to more adventures with The Circus and company.

The writing was alright, thin at times but never terrible.

The characters were very flat. The protagonist constantly had to have her emotions ‘locked down’ in case some character growth were to happen. The partner was fun but also the spunky black friend who would say things like ‘I will slap the taste out of your mouth’ which is cringe. There is also that issue with her father which might be concerning considering the ‘fun’ tropes around black fathers. The antagonist in a ‘blonde bombshell with a bad Russian accent’ was just bad. Add a heap of pimply teenagers uncomfortable with sex and hometown boys that are the definition of manly and comforting, and you start to wonder if there were any tropes the author left out by mistake.

World-building and plot. At the start I was very excited to learn about the supernatural world and all the players in it. But by the end of the book the plot has managed to make me lose all interest. If the protagonist, the highly skilled supernatural operative, did not see the ‘big reveal’ that I saw from before the half-point of the book then would the world the author build really hold any surprises for me? Doubt.

If you are looking for some time to kill then by all means check this book out, there is nothing glaringly wrong with it. But there is also nothing in it that makes me want to pick up the next book in the series. So an all around solid ‘meh’.

I was trying to read straight through the Daniel Faust series but had to backtrack to start this series before #9…and I think I actually like the Harmony Black books a bit better.

Loved it

Absolutely loved this book and the characters. Great plot with lots of action. With characters that you can fall in love with that have real depth to them. Definitely going to get the next one.

This was an interesting urban fantasy about two supernaturals who work for an FBI-type unit to take down hostile supernaturals without the public knowing (since the public is not aware of supernaturals in this world.) Harmony Black is a witch and her partner Jessi is a werewolf, and together they are sent out to find the monster that has been kidnapping babies out of their cribs in the night.

I found author Craig Schaefer's world-building to be unique and left me guessing where the mystery was going all the way through the book. There was really nice diversity represented throughout the book as well. The FBI angle was also really strong.

I didn't realize Harmony Black was a spin off of the Daniel Faust series until the end, but fwiw I didn't feel anything was lacking.

I loved the heroine and her badass partner. The banter was sharp, the demons absolutely terrifying, and the plotting delightfully clever. The hint of romance was sweet but didn't distract from the story. I loved that it wasn't just a "secret agent fights bad guys" angle, there was history and family and self discovery too.
