Themes or characters that resonated with me: In the beginning I felt some sorrow for Macbeth as he had doubts and regret and remorse. I felt he was manipulated by fate and his wife.
Emotions, thoughts, or memories it brought up in me: I think the comparison with Crime & Punishment is interesting. Raskolnikov seemed to retreat and want to erase his deeds from memory. His regret was crippling. On the other hand Macbeth followed his crime with more crime, once he got rolling he saw no way out but to continue to commit to the murders of ambition. It is interesting the way the prophecy seemed to influence an otherwise good and honest subject, Macbeth, to kill his king. It invites questions about the way good people can do bad things through an unfortunate turn of events, out of their control.
Opinion about the author or writing style: Obviously Shakespeare is a master.
Favorite Passages:
"And oftentimes, to win us to our harm,
The instruments of darkness tell us truths,
Win us with honest trifles, to betray's
In deepest consequence."
________
"Or art thou but
A dagger of the mind, a false creation,
Proceeding from the heat-oppressèd brain?"
________
"Murd. I--- He's a traitor.
Son--- Thou liest, thou shag-eared villain.
Murd. I--- What, you egg?
Young Fry of treachery! [He stabs the son.
Son--- He has killed me, mother:
Run away, I pray you. [He dies.

Not my favorite Shakespearean play, but one of the most memorable and bloody!
"But screw your courage to the sticking-place, and we'll not fail." = ”If you keep your courage, then we will not fail.”
"Things without all remedy should be without regard. What's done is done.” = ”If you can't fix something, you shouldn't worry about it. You cannot undo what is already done.”

3 1/2 Stars. This was not a highly evocative read for me; however, it was not a tedious one either. Something about the plot line kept my mind interested even when my heart felt nothing.
