I really liked this book. It is the second in the Realm Breaker trilogy and follows Corayne and her companions as they try to save the realm from distraction. It feels like the authors love letter to Lord of the Rings with a feminist twist and I am loving it. The book is fast flowing and easy to read and the slow burn of romance in the background keeps you wanting more. By this stage I am heavily invested in the characters and I can’t wait to read the third book.
My only gripe is the author uses the plural “femurs” rather than “femora” but that can be easily ignored.
I love Valtik and I can’t help but laugh when she turns up.
The witty commentary and occasional humour keeps the book flowing as well!
Really world building at its best!

I no longer regret buying these books!!! Aveyard grew SO much between book one and book two it's almost as if she became a different person. She really grabbed fantasy by the collar and said "sit down let me get this". Every critique I had from book one vanished in book two. Her characters came alive in the sequel. They became their own, as did the world they lived in. I felt so much more immersed in this one and will definitely be getting my hands on book three as soon as possible. As far as the series as a whole goes, it's not really up there as a top fantasy series or anything. It was just nice to feel like I was reading a Victoria Aveyard book again.

I didn’t like the first one so I’m not sure why I read this one which I also didn’t like. The series feels like a story starting in the middle and I’m just not compelled.

OMG, how did I just "meh" my last review?!

Honestly, I enjoyed this so much more than the first one. Even though there were slower parts, they still felt like they contributed to the story's progression. What really helped was that the crew didn’t linger—every time the pace slowed, it was disrupted by new plot twists.

Even Erida’s chapters, which I initially found quite slow (especially after she married Taristan in the first book), picked up pace and followed a character development arc that I’m very much enjoying.

Now, onto the main crew—I just love them. They’re so much fun, and their wildly different personalities somehow fit so well together. I also really appreciate the variety in their ages and life experiences, which don’t blend into a generic "found family" mush. You feel that Corayne is too young and inexperienced for the weight of what she’s facing, while Sorasa and Dom are clearly the seasoned veterans of the group. And Andry—he’s such a knight at heart, even though he technically isn’t one.

And finally, THAT ENDING. Pain. So much pain. I’m holding onto hope from the vagueness surrounding one character’s fate. Please let book three have a happier ending.

Spoiler IF VICTORIA DARE KILLED DOM, I WILL RIOT. NOT HIMMMMMMMM.

Old Review (4 Stars)

I really enjoyed this book! (Not sure if it’s more or equally as much as the first, though.) The character development for everyone was fantastic—no one felt left behind!

I’m so excited to see how the series continues. I’m completely gripped by this story.
