I liked the sequel SO much more than I did the first book. I believe part of it has to do with me not being in a reading slump and the fact that I actually am understanding how Allward works as a world. The downsides I had to this book was that the action wasn't that great. It was in the beginning, but it gradually got worse and worse. It wasn't that Aveyard did a bad job at writing, it was more the fact that she just didn't write a lot of action scenes this time around. I also felt as if one of the POVs was pointless and added very little/nothing to the story, but that's just my opinion.
Okay, now the good stuff, and oh boy were there a lot. Um, so the 1st book in the series I said that I didn't like the romances blooming. I lied. I most definitely do like the romances in this series, with one being the exception. I absolutely adore and love The Companions together and also their separate characters/relationships with one another. I caught myself rooting for them the entire time, when of course I wasn't rooting for the bad guy lol. That's a whole other story though. The chemistry between characters were great and even when there wasn't a whole lot going on, plot wise, I still found myself enjoying the more slower/calming scenes. It felt right and it felt like a nice break from the constant anxiety/stress I got from reading. Anyways, all in all, this was a great sequel to the first book in the series.

Every single time it switched to Erida's pov I mentally groaned bc I knew I was abt the read the same rehashed chapter of her being girl boss (killing civilians) and pining over Taristan (every other sentence is her being breathless at his power or whatever.) Kinda mind blown that a lot of people root for their romance when they are remorselessly leveling cities and murdering children like... are you guys ok.
