Okay but this was SO much better than book 1. I'm still not attached to the characters but the book is finally showcasing the talents Aveyard possesses.

Hmm where to start. Didn't love the ending on this one but loved the banter between Dom and Sorasa for most of the book. Especially their scene with the Amhara.

There were parts I flew through and others I struggled to get past. Maybe I just hate Erida but anytime it got to her POV I struggled.

Looking forward to seeing how it all ends in the next book!

The last third of this book pushed it up to four stars on GoodReads, however truth be told, this is a 3.5 star book. I think Blade Breaker irons in Victoria Aveyard's reputation (in my mind) of writing not-very-great second books. Truly, my star rating should not be trusted for I am a Victoria Aveyard stan first and foremost, and all my judgement has been clouded when it comes to her for the past seven years. That being said, I still found fault with it.
First of all, the book felt very samey to the first one. And it was samey. The gang is together, they search for allies, they convince allies, they TRAVEL and by the end of the book they close/don't close a spindle. I WAS BORED. AND ON *TOP* OF THAT BOREDOM, THERE WAS NO BONDING BETWEEN THE CHARACTERS.
I was in my housemate's room SCREAMING about the lack of romance in this book. I am not a romace lover. I do not believe a book needs romance to be good. HOWEVER. Victoria has been stringing us on with THREE WHOLE ASS COUPLES that gave us NOTHING for like 900 pages. Immediately after that rant I read the bathtub scene and was immediately appeased but by god. It was unbearable. And even besides that, the characters didn't seem to connect to me. They didn't seem like friends. And then immediately after the bathtub scene things picked up and everyone became friends and I was happy but that does not justify 300 pages of misery for the first half of the book.
I also truly believe that the first book should have stuck to a single POV. The 3rd person narration plus the constantly changing POVs also fully had an impact on how disjointed the characters felt in the second book. And while it's true that by its end, I felt close with all of the characters, this should have been a thing by the end of the first book (as it has been the case with Red Queen) (besides Cal fuck Cal all my homies hate Cal god bless there's no Cal in this story or I would have actually gone mad).
I also think we shouldn't be getting as much of Erida's POV. She could be very scary but I got to a point where I was reading where I was annoyed that her POV came up again.

ALL THAT BEING SAID.
By god if Dom and Soarsa are dead. I'll be so pissed off. Oh my god. Kill all of them if you must but Dom and Soarsa my babies. And to be fair, something tells me they won't be dead, since Victoria would not kill this slow burn ship before a super heartfelt moment between them happens, HOWEVER I am used to my expectations being subverted. But also the romance.
I was telling my housemate that for the third book to actually be interesting and different, all the companions would have to die and leave Corayne alone OR Corayne had to die. Seems like I got the first one. I hate predicting plot points, but I didn't, because Dom and Soarsa aren't dead so it's all good. :)
That being said I know for a fact ONE OR THE OTHER WILL DIE, the amount of FORESHADOWING THROWN at ME through this book of their death is actually upsetting. I just refuse to believe it happened already.
So yeah, 3.5/5 stars. Love Victoria Aveyard.
