It was incredibly challenging to understand the speech of the Higgins family.
The book has very similar themes to Pride and Prejudice which is a much better book and I think P&P did a better job of showing character growth.
I don't think the writing style of this era is for me. It very much felt like there were 5 words for every 1 actually needed and as a result I was quite bored at times.
I did enjoy the yearning and angst on the part of Mr Thornton. I feel like the intention was to show that Margaret had grown to love and appreciate the northern miller folk but I don't feel there were many incidents to encourage this save for her relationship with the Higgins, the Bouchers and conversations with Mr Thornton.
The ending was also a major disappointment. I had hoped for a big romantic reunion but it was rushed and unfeeling.

I read this when I was a teen and I liked it but so much was lost lost to me. Dialogue is wonderful, characters growth is superbly shown, and story is charming. Gaskell paints such different characters so vividly. Yes it is romantic but it is so much more than that as well. And the ending is perfect yet how I wish she wrote more! Going on my favorite list! ❤️
2023- This book ❤️ I have yet to find another I love so much!

first half (?) was great, i loved the many discussions about workers's rights and i lowkey wish that was all this book was; margaret and thornton having discussions and thornton becoming progressively more socialist. i definitely did not like the part where everybody died, and also the very long moralizing about a single lie (and it was very reasonable to lie in that situation). every book is more interesting when the heroine isn't such a good christian. anyways, i really loved the end scene but other than that i wasn't a fan of the latter half.
also, the dad was the real villain of the story. margaret shouldn't have had to deal with everything alone, what a fucking useless human being.
