Systemic. Strategic. Intentional. The isolation of our fellow citizens in the prison population is appalling. It is not designed for survival nor rehabilitation. The intention is to break the human spirit. Mr. Woodfox survived…..barely. His experience in solitary confinement was the fight of his life. Mr. Woodfox was fully aware that death was the only way he would lose. His testimony is one for the ages but there should be no more after him.

The greed of humans, the love of money and power crosses racial, educational, socioeconomic and gender barriers. This book is a challenge to community and a challenge to humanity as a whole to do better. It is a challenge to consider truth and justice. It is a mandate for you to do the work to save someone else. Our fellow incarcerated citizens are a forgotten part of our population. They are neglected and abused in unimaginable ways. We don’t see them as human, we see them as their offenses.

We must do better.

NYT Notable Books 2019: 84/100

This book should have been an incredibly hard read, and yet Woodfox's positivity throughout really changed the tone of the book. Despite over 40 years in solitary confinement, Woodfox never gave up and was constantly working to find ways to make things better for himself and his fellow prisoners. His story was interesting and inspiring, and told incredibly well.

Needs to be required reading in the United States. Starting in middle school and repeated every year thereafter. The book exposes the depths to which white supremacy resides in this country’s soil. Woodfox is a warrior. His lessons, experience, pain, suffering, triumphs, intellect, heart, and wisdom must be heeded.

"To those of you who are just entering the world of social struggle: welcome. To those of you who have spent years struggling for human rights and social justice: Don't give up. Look at me and see how the strength and determination of the human spirit defy all evil. For 44 years I defied the state of Louisiana and the Department of Corrections. Their main objective was to break my spirit. They did not break me. I have witnessed the horrors of man's cruelty to man. I did not lose my humanity. I bear the scars of beatings, loneliness, isolation, and persecution. I am also marked by every kindness."

Rest in Power, Albert Woodfox.
