I wish that the entire murder mystery was not a part of this book. The murder as plot device didn't work for me. I would have found the story of Judith Carrigan strong enough as a plot line. She wasn't necessarily a likable character, but she and her secrets could have been interesting enough to carry a book.
Meh, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, though it did take place partly in Philly so maybe some points for that?

I was completely drawn in by this story. What happened in the ruins of Eastern State Penitentiary on that night so long ago? Six college friends, a professor, and a little boy are locked in, and one of them doesn't come out. Boylan keeps us guessing who the victim is for a bit, but when it is revealed, and we get to know the players in the present, the story moves right along. However, I was disappointed in the ending. The finale takes place back in the Penitentiary, which is now open to tourists, during a confusing night of mistaken identities and cosplay on the part of the tourists. Ultimately, it all comes right, though. Entertaining and readable, with shifts in time and point of view that I found easy to follow.

DNF at 9%. I could imagine the story being decent, but the dialogue and writing in general was so stilted I had to move on.

I had a hard time in the beginning because it kept switching from first to third person. Once I figured out what was going on though it didn't bother me too much. Overall I enjoyed the book. It's a quick read. I say that as a slow reader. Honestly I usually finish books in about a month if they're good. I finished this one in less than a week. I can't remember the last time that happened.

Good concept and story but a bit long and lots of filler I could have done without.

A little confusing in parts. Is that character still alive? A figment of the imagination? Whose point of view are we coming from now? But overall really engaging.
When are we our "true" selves. Is that even a question that can be answered? High school friends grapple with who they are. 35 years later... are they defined by an incident? Are they able to move on?

I’ve just finished this, and I’m going to need some time to process…everything before I can rate and review it properly. My emotions are all over the place. Leaving the five star rating here so that more people may read the book—as they should, it’s phenomenal—but not sure how I’ll personally feel after I’ve worked through everything.
