This book was just so immersive. I couldn't help but fall in love with Vasya and enjoyed watching her grow into herself.  I can't wait to read the next book!

Fascinating look at how Orthodox Christian faith might have intersected with medieval Russian pagan beliefs

The storytelling was enchanting. The prose was beautifully written and every scene was given the same care. This fairytale is a wonderful story to get lost in on a cold day with a cup of tea. You need barely any imagination for the rich text to come to life in your mind. The story told is also worth while and the protagonist is love-able and even the step-mother antagonist is someone to sympathize with. As always, it seems men create their own problems, but this was a fresh telling of that type of plot.

The style was not one I could sustain reading for a whole novel. At once felt quite surface-level and unwieldy.

It was definitely an interesting book and i am curious about the next one! I do think there are some things the author can hone; i wasn’t a fan of the political or marriage plot lines as it didn’t really capture my interest, and I would love to see some higher stakes. I highly recommend googling the creatures discussed while you read as it adds a lot to the book!

Technically Konstantinos and the Bear are not queer… but somethings smells fruity
