I may end up changing my rating later but at this point after just having read it I couldn't give it three.
It wasn't a bad book, I actually really liked the premise and the characters and the starts to their plot lines, both together and separate.
However, those plot lines didn't grow in a satisfying way. They were there when the romance plot called for it but that was it. I understand making the romance the dominant storyline, but the other plot lines were interesting and compelling too. I would have loved to see them unfold in a satisfying way.
There was also quite a few instances where we were told about developments instead of seeing them.
Overall a decent book, but there's something about good base stories not living up to their potential that is worse than a bad story.

Personally, I did not like this book and it was incredibly disappointing. This was my first time reading a WLW book and I was excited to find it at my bookstore as I struggle to find LGBTQIA+ books that aren’t MLM. Unfortunately, it reads like a Wattpad fanfiction and one of the characters, Morgan, was completely irritating throughout the book. She was completely self-entitled and arrogant but this all gets brushed over because she does things to better the LGBTQIA+ community. Just because you help a community doesn’t mean you have the right to try and dictate how much people express themselves. These flaws are “resolved” at the end of the book, but the way she outted Ruby and had the audacity to say she didn’t was the last straw. Also, the fact that this was just brushed over, is inappropriate especially for a young adult book. Teens shouldn’t read this and think it is okay. It can be extremely dangerous and harmful to the person being outted and should be taken seriously. Ruby I felt was a much better character and by the end of the book I was just waiting for her chapters to I could hear someone else’s thoughts other than Morgan’s.

An enjoyable fluffy quick read that touches on some deeper moments. If you enjoyed Heartstopper, I would recommend this but do check the TWs first. I can't wait to read more of Dugans books!

i think it was a cute read. i liked ruby's story and development more than morgans. the writing felt a bit rushed at the end and i couldn't keep track of the timeline. ruby's friends didn't really seem to have much of a purpose in my opinion, and i wish they were included more and i knew more about them. it felt more like everly and marcus were the "token black friends." i'm not a fan of the miscommunication/not listening in this book either, but i get it's for conflict. morgan bothered me quite a bit at some points and was incredibly frustrating. maybe that's just her thing but as a reader it was hard to digest. i just wanted her to listen to ruby one time and by the end i wasn't over the moon about the solution. overall, not too awful but it was just lacking in so many areas. however i want to try reading dugan's other works in the future because i really like her writing style. this one is just not my favorite.
