It’s been nearly 30 years since I last read Wuthering Heights in full, and this was my first time experiencing it in audio. If anything, it’s even more astonishing now. With age, I’ve come to appreciate different layers: the intricate structure of a tale within a tale spanning three decades, and the brilliance of its unlikeable, unreliable narrators. That quality gives the story its mystery and multi-layered depth.

I found myself enjoying the second half far more than I once did. The novel could easily have lost momentum after Cathy’s death, yet it escalates instead, building to a bittersweet and strangely hopeful conclusion. Catherine and Hareton’s arc offers a glimmer of redemption in a story so often remembered only for its darkness. Many see it as purely bleak, but I think Brontë intended it as much a redemptive tale as a story of obsession.

The audiobook was superb. The range of Yorkshire accents, perfectly attuned to class and geography, added texture without overacting.
